Islamic weddings are frowned upon if they are made in such a way that they break the rules of decency and good taste. Usually, a verbal proposal is sufficient for the agreement of the marriage. Muslims should not delay the Nikaah if the boy or girl has reached an age where they can be married.
Here are a small set of rules and Islamic guidelines for the Muslims who want to get married:
Islam reccommends marriage at the earliest as it is very important in the Muslim culture. For the ceremony of Nikaah, close relatives can be invited, however families should make the effort of trying to invite people from afar. If a bride’s father is an aalim, then he himself may solemnise the marriage.
A man should be a little older than the woman for the couple to get married in a Muslim wedding tradition. It’s not a rule, it’s more like a recommendation. According to Islam law, a man should not incur debts to perform a grand wedding. He must always celebrate within his means.
It is also against Islamic law to display a bride on stage. Presents must also be given to her only within the means. The bride’s side need not necessarily spend extravagantly for a big feast, and the families need not even think that they will lose respect if they do not invite too many people for the wedding in a Muslim culture. All that matters is that they should respect Allah and the Holy Koran.
After the engagement or agreement of the marriage, the couple should not appear in public together. They also should not exchange rings in the presence of anybody. They must be seperate till the complete marriage ceremony is over.
The groom’s side should also not expect any sort of gifts from the bride’s side during the wedding. The wedding should also be very decent and pleasant. The bride should not wear any revealing clothes and the guests should not be allowed to touch the bride with an excuse of wishing her.
A groom sometimes appears in front of his mother-in-law and shows off the gifts he receives. This should not be done in a Muslim wedding because many evil eyes may be cast on the groom among the guests. The bride’s parents should not make a big show out of her dresses and other finery. Instead they must advice the bride about how to conduct herself and also how to manage her life after marriage.
An Islamic wedding prohibits the appearance of a couple in public when they exchange rings and look at each other. Instead they must be separate until the marriage ceremonies are over. For the contraction of a valid wedding concerning Muslims, no religious ceremony or place is required to do the needful. After the Nikaah, the bridegroom goes to the ladies side where he will offer gifts to the sister of the bride. After that ladies and gents will dine seperately in two different halls.
Dining is a much enjoyed activity at most of these weddings. Not only are they served excellent food of various dishes, they also get to dine with all the relatives. This is also a place where the families of the bride and groom can mingle and converse with each other.
As you see, Islamic weddings are slightly different than other types of weddings, being guided by important guidelines, which are all made to ensure that the ceremony goes well and will be blessed by Allah.
